How To: Back Up Outlook Express Email User Information
Summary:
This article provides information on ow to back up Outlook Express email user and address book
information and Internet Explorer Favorites.
Solution
Precautions/general back up information
·  Do not delete or move original files which may cause the parent application (IE: Outlook
Express or Internet Explorer) to fail to function when next run.
·
Backing up email may take significant disk space. To perform a complete back up, ensure that
sufficient space is available on the back up media.
·
Several different applications are available on the Internet to assist in backing up critical files
for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. A search on the internet for 'Backup' should provide
results for research. Suddenlink does not support these applications, but does strongly recommend
that critical data on your PC be backed up on a regular basis.
·
If there is more than one user login on your computer, a back up should be completed for each
account.
Type of files that should be backed up
·
Email folders
·
Address books
·
Favorites
File locations
File locations vary depending on computer configuration. Following is a list of the files and some
typical locations for these files:
·
Email (stored in the Mail directory)
·C:/Windows/Outlook Express/Mail
·C:/Program Files/Outlook Express/Mail
·C:/Program Files/Outlook Express/username Mail (if user profiles or user accounts were
used, replace user name with user profile or login name.)
·
Address Books (stored as the file type .wab - example, john.wab, susan.wab)
·C:/Windows/Application Data/Microsoft/Address Bookusername.wab
·C:/Profilesusername/Application Data/Microsoft/Address Bookusername.wab

Favorites (stored in the Favorites directory):
·C:/Windows/Favorites

An alternate method of backing up Internet Explorer Favorites is provided in the steps below.
Solution ­ Export Internet Explorer Favorites
1. Launch Internet Explorer
2. From the Menu bar click File
3. The Import/Export Wizard will appear, click Next.
4. Highlight Export Favorites, click Next.

5. Choose the Favorites folder, click Next.
6. Select the Export to a File or Address option and click Browse to select the drive or folder where
the backup is to be saved.
6. Type in a name for the file.
In this example, we used the file name Favorites Backup. Click Save to return to the Import /
Export Wizard.

7. The Completing the Import / Export Wizard window will appear. Click Finish.
8. A Successfully Exported Favorites pop up will appear. Click OK.
