How To: Connect a Cable Modem with a USB Connection
► Summary
This article provides information on how to connect a cable modem with a USB connection..
► Manual Solution
There are two ways to connect a computer to a cable modem for Suddenlink High Speed Internet service: an
Ethernet cable modem to an Ethernet port in a computer or a USB cable modem to a USB port in a computer.
Items needed for a USB installation
·
A USB port in the computer and a USB cable
·
A surge protector
·
A free power outlet
·
A Suddenlink High Speed Internet Installation CD
Coax cable line
·
An operating system CD
USB Cable
Installation steps
a.
Connect the cable coax line that is dedicated to the cable modem to the cable connector on the cable
modem.
b.
Plug the transformer into a grounded, surge-protected 110VAC household outlet.
c.
Connect the power transformer to the modem's power connector.
Most cable modems are "on" all the time and do not have a switch. If the modem has a power switch, turn
on the modem, and wait for the modem to synch with the system. This may take several minutes. A modem
will indicate when synchronization occurs.
d.
Plug one end of the USB cable into the USB port on the cable modem. Connect the other end of the USB
cable into the computer's USB port, which may be found on either the front or the back of the computer.
If the cable modem has both USB and Ethernet connectors, only use one or the other, not both.
e.
Insert the USB driver CD as prompted by the operating system, and follow the on-screen instructions as
prompted.
The modem is now connected and ready for Suddenlink High Speed Internet.
