How To: Install a Modem and Network Card
► Summary:
Suddenlink High Speed Internet requires a cable modem. Typically, an Ethernet port is also required.
This procedure details how to install and connect the hardware components.
► Solution
Ethernet Connection
The computer can connect to an external cable modem through an Ethernet port. Installation of a
network interface card (NIC) is necessary if the computer does not have an Ethernet port.
After installation, the NIC must be configured for TCP/IP so that it can communicate with the
Suddenlink High Speed Internet high-speed network. The installation software should make the
required configurations, but it may be necessary to manually perform the TCP/IP configuration.
Universal Serial Bus Connection
If a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connects the cable modem to the computer, the computer needs to have
a working and available USB port. If the USB port is already in use, installation of a 2-for-I USB adapter
is necessary so that a USB port is available for the USB-Ethernet adapter.
Internal Connection
If the computer has an internal cable modem, no outside port is needed. The computer will need an
available bus slot and have sufficient IRQ support to handle an additional internal device. With an
internal cable modem, the coax cable will be connected directly to the back of computer.
