How To: Set Up TCP/IP for Windows XP
► Summary:
This solution explains how to set up Windows XP for High Speed Internet and confirm the network
settings (TCP/IP) for Windows XP.
► Solution
1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet Connections.
3. Click Network Connections.
4. From the Network Connections window, double-click Local Area Connections.
5. From the Local Area Connection Status dialog box, click Properties, and then proceed
to Step 6.
6. From the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, on the General tab, click to
select Internet protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
7. From the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, on the General tab, ensure
that Obtain IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address automatically are
selected.
8. From the Alternate Configuration tab, ensure that Automatic private IP address is
selected.
9. From the General tab, click Advanced.
10. From the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box, on the IP Settings tab, ensure that DHCP
Enabled shows under IP address, and that Automatic metric is selected.
11. From the DNS tab, ensure that only Append primary and connection specific DNS
suffixes and Register this connection's addresses in DNS are selected.
12. From the WINS tab, ensure that Enable LMHOSTS Lookup is selected, and that Default in
the NetBIOS setting section is selected.
13. Click OK.
Note: You will be prompted to restart the computer.
14. When the computer restarts, you should be connected to the Internet. If not, from the
Start menu, click Control Panel, and then click Network Settings. Right-click Local Area
Connection and click to select Enable.
