Some home security systems include a cellular transmitter that is used to communicate with our central service station in the event of an emergency. Why are cellular carriers shutting down 3G?

Cellular carriers are shutting down 3G and older networks in favor of faster and more advanced technology. As a result, any device that use 3G technology will no longer be supported and consumers will need to update to 4G LTE (long term evolution) supported devices to avoid disruption.

With the emergence of faster and more robust technology like 4G (LTE) and 5G, carriers have decided it’s time to stop supporting older technology. The 3G network was built for basic needs like voice and limited data transfer, but due to next generation technologies and services, cellular carriers now provide faster and more comprehensive coverage on the 4G (LTE) and 5G networks.

Can I update to 5G?

No, currently the 5G network is not widely available in security cell devices. We fully expect the LTE, long term evolution, network to be able to support your security needs for the foreseeable future.

What does the 3G network have to do with my security system?

Your home security system includes a cellular transmitter that is used to communicate with our central service station in the event of an emergency. If your device is currently reliant on the 3G network this means it will no longer function when the 3G networks are shut down. Your alarm may audibly sound in your home but will no longer communicate with our central service station to notify us that emergency services are needed.

How do I know if my Suddenlink Home Security system is impacted by the 3G shut down?

If you are impacted, you will receive a notification from Suddenlink Home Security about updating your home security system. To ensure your home security system is updated, please call 866.999.3278 to schedule a complimentary in-home service visit so we can replace your equipment at no additional cost.

When is the deadline for updating my home security panel?

Most carriers will fully stop supporting 3G devices in 2022 but will start phasing out the network over time. It is important that you schedule the complimentary in-home service visit as soon as possible to ensure that there is no lapse in coverage for your service.
