Philo: Availability, Cost, and Overall Value

What is Philo?

Philo began as a streaming service which sought to provide streaming television to students living on campus. In fact, the service was founded in 2010 by Harvard students back in 2010 under the name Tivli. Similar to the Facebook origin story, the service was intended to spread to other college campuses so that students would have an alternative way to watch media. The company grew over the next several years, providing its service to all people, not just students. Now, the question is, is this the right streaming service for you?

How much is Philo?

Unlike many other streaming services, Philo simplifies it’s offering to just  one membership for $20/month. It offers 63 channels, with four additional channels, Bloomberg Television, Cheddar News, Crackle, and Revry.

Not quite sold on it yet? If you’re not ready to take the plunge know that they  offer a few premium channels as add-ons. If you pay an extra $6 per month, you can add three Epix channels: Epix, Epix Hits, and Epix2. For $9 per month, you can add three channels from Starz: Starz, Starz Encore, and Starz Kids & Family.

There are currently no contracts for the service and Philo offers unlimited DVR that allows you to keep your recordings stored for 30 days. You can also stream from three devices simultaneously and create 10 profiles on one individual account.

Does Philo Offer Any Discounts or Specials?

Philo currently offers a seven-day free trial for their standard service, as well as for the Epix and STARZ add-ons.

Philo will occasionally offer online deals, like $5 off Philo or 50% off the Epix channel, so if you’re on the fence about opting in then you should wait for a promotion! We recommend surfing the web and checking the website for these deals.

Is Philo Worth Getting?

With so many different streaming services available, we say this probably isn’t worth subscribing to. The Live TV streaming service offers a decent mix of entertainment and lifestyle channels and it is affordable, however, there are very few news networks and virtually no sports content available on it.

However, the low cost for access to television channels, simple plan options, and the ability to cancel or re-subscribe at any time makes Philo worth a look if you want an easy, cheap streaming service. You may find that what Philo offers is perfect for you, or it may simply act as a stepping stone towards getting a broader streaming package or perhaps even cable.
